ABSTRACT

The security of the nation’s mass transit systems became a concern for Americans after the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks in September 2001. But, while New York City’s subway and train systems were affected by the attacks and transportation links in south Manhattan have had to be rebuilt, neither system was a direct target. However, intelligence gathered as the nation launched its “war on terrorism” has indicated that the nation’s subway systems and perhaps its interstate bus systems might become targets of terrorist violence. Nonetheless, little was done to secure the systems until the Madrid train bombings in March 2004 and much remains to be done if the systems are to be reasonably secure.
