Sustainable industrial development requires a balance between economic, technological, and environmental aspects. In particular, the development of cleaner and renewable technologies, as well as being fundamental to process optimization, waste reduction, and pollution prevention, are becoming imperative for developing

countries, such as the Latin American transition-economy countries. The use of renewable resources in the chemical industry also represents an opportunity for the growth for agricultural production while reducing the impact of oil-based processes on the environment. However, in the transition toward a market economy, Latin American countries encounter significant difficulties that are in part related to the presence of old and environmentally unfriendly technologies.
