Proteomics is a recently coined term that refers to the fi eld of study of the proteome, defi ned for the fi rst time in 1994 as “the PROTEin products of a genOME”.1 Since its introduction, the term has found widespread acceptance across the breadth of biological research. A simple search of the Medline database indicated an almost exponential increase in the number of published articles about proteomics since 1995 (Figure 15.1). The increase continues unabated to the present.
