ABSTRACT
In the first section in this handbook we primarily focused our attention upon the roles of the server, examining the use of PCs to mainframes as data repositories in an organization. Although it was difficult to avoid describing server functionality in our discussion of the roles of the server, detailed examination of their functionality was deferred until this section. Chapters included in this section provide detailed information covering a variety of technical aspects that govern the overall functionality of servers as well as the functions they perform, with the latter important when considering their installation and operation.
