ABSTRACT

Information technology (IT) has been applied to the solution of business problems for the past half century. Although studies have shown that most information in an enterprise is contained in unstructured data, traditional IT has done little to apply automation to any of the areas. With the advent of doing business over the Internet, or e-Business, and the associated collaboration over wide geographic expanses and extensive publishing to the Web, the automation of content and documents and those processes that depend on them may be a critical requirement for most organizations. The collective whole, aggregated content, formatted for presentation, is generally referred to as a document. A content management system manages components of documents, so it requires all of the functionality of a document management system with some additions. The lack of automated document and content management, however, has produced the opposite effects.
