ABSTRACT

In 1993, the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM) embarked on an initiative to define, measure, and report on the forest values Canadians want to sustain and enhance. An extensive consultative process was carried out involving scientists and others from the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, as well as experts from the academic community, industry, and nongovernmental organizations. Two years later, as an outcome of this initiative, the report “Defining Sustainable Forest Management: A Canadian Approach to Criteria and Indicators” was published (Canadian Council of Forest Ministers, 1995). This report represented the best-available scientific knowledge on indicators related to sustainable forest management in the Canadian context. Appendix 93.I lists the six criteria and elements associated with each criterion.
