ABSTRACT

Tropical ecosystems are among the most complex in the world. Defining their health is a difficult task but concepts, approaches, and methods emerging from the literature on ecosystem health increasingly provide insights on how this complexity can be properly examined and understood. This large-scale ecosystem health study in the Langat Basin of the state of Selangor, Malaysia, aims to find and provide a rational framework within which the health of a tropical ecosystem may be assessed and monitored. The work is funded by the United Nations Environment Program, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP/ROAP) with funds from the Danish Cooperation on Environment and Development (DANCED). It is part of UNEP/ROAP’s initiative on training and research on environmental management (TREM) in Thailand and Malaysia.
