ABSTRACT

The Langat River Basin, which is adjacent to the Klang Valley, has an area of about 2938 km2 and an estimated population of about 725,000 in 1997. Administratively it is under three whole districts — Hulu Langat, Sepang, and Kuala Langat of Selangor — as well as the southern part of the Seremban District in the state of Negeri Sembilan. The basin has been the focus of major recent development that included the new federal government administrative capital of Putrajaya, the multimedia supercorridor linking Putra Jaya with KLIA and Kuala Lumpur, Cyber Jaya, and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang (Nordin and Azrina, 1998). Additionally, the development of new townships such as Bandar Baru Nilai and expansion of existing towns and villages such as Dengkil and Semenyih contribute to the growth of an increasingly dense urban sprawl with concomitant urbanization and industrialization that can potentially cause complex environmental problems.
