ABSTRACT

People are becoming more aware that we live in the transition from a world with an abundance of natural resources to one of severe limits. The world population is likely to increase with another 90 million per annum and will reach another doubling from today’s 6 billion before it levels off. At the same time, access to water, soil, land, fishery, and forest resources is becoming increasingly scarce. Global warming adds to the problem. The space for expansion of the human enterprise is shrinking rapidly, and nothing seems to be stopping this trend. This is a somewhat dismal picture.
