ABSTRACT

Conservation of tropical forests is one of the most urgent and challenging tasks of foresters, biologists, social scientists, environmental managers, nonprofit organizations, and public administrators in relevant departments. The species richness of tropical forests has been greatly emphasized, and the serious consequences of deforestation and consequent loss of biodiversity have been highlighted. However, of all tropical forests, those considered as lowland tropical rain forests contain the greatest number of species, and their destruction would have the worst and most extensive global effects (UNEP, 1995; Whitmore and Sayer, 1992; Alvarez-Buylla et al., 1997).
