ABSTRACT

While the impact of ecosystem changes in agriculture on human health have not been accurately characterized, the occupational health hazards of agricultural work have been well described (Schenker, 1996). Agriculture ranks as one of the two or three most hazardous occupations based on fatality rates, with an injury mortality rate approximately three to five times that for all other occupations (Myers, 1990). More than 700 agricultural work-related deaths and 140,000 disabling injuries occur annually in the U.S. (Council, 1999).
