ABSTRACT
Early range research used soil survey information to classify rangeland sites and to plan their management (Shantz, 1911; Clements, 1934). Interactions of abiotic factors on parent material (Branson et al., 1964) and on slope (Klemmendson, 1964) thus delineated basic ecological and physiological processes occurring in plant communities.
