ABSTRACT

Achieving sustainable use of the planet will require a new view of the relationship between human society and the environment and a concomitant acceptance of responsibility by those now living to provide a quality life for their descendants for an indefinite period of time. Both industrial ecology and natural capitalism provide useful guidelines and case histories on how these two changes might be achieved. Industrial ecology is the study of the flows of materials and energy in the industrial environment and the effects of those flows on natural systems.
