ABSTRACT
The nineteenth century was an important and notable period in Irish mathematics and science. Ireland produced many fine mathematicians. Some, such as William Rowan Hamilton, George Francis FitzGerald
and James MacCullagh spent their working lives there while others such as George Stokes, William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) and Joseph Larmor left the country.
