ABSTRACT
Alcoholism is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, second only to nicotine dependence. However, the majority of individuals with alcohol use disorders never seek treatment. The ratio of untreated to treated individuals with alcohol use disorders in the general population has been estimated to be between 3:1 and 13:1 (see also Chapter 2 on the natural history of alcoholism).
