ABSTRACT

Most earthquakes occur due to the movement of faults. Faults slowly build up stresses that are suddenly released during an earthquake. We measure the size of earthquakes using moment magnitude as defined in Equation 2.1: () https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> M = 2 3 log M 0 − 16.05 https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780429114489/ba9daefe-af27-4d5f-af25-84bd6477efd6/content/eq36.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
