ABSTRACT

F. Gejyo et al described beta-2-Microglobulin related amyloidosis in a patient who had been on regular hemodialysis for 13 years. Since then it has become known that long term hemodialysis (HD) may be complicated by systemic, or localized beta-2-Microglobulin amyloidosis, frequently involving bones and joints. HD is frequently associated or complicated by disorders of the locomotor system including renal osteodystrophy, pyrophosphate arthritis, avascular necrosis of bone, destructive arthropathy, subchondral bone erosions, cystic bone lesions, periarticular calcification, recurrent hemarthrosis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Dialysis associated arthropathy, aseptic bone necrosis of the left femoral head, subcapital neck fracture of the right femur. The HD associated beta-2-Microglobulin amyloid deposits in the synovial membrane may co-existent with different types of amyloidosis. Dystropic of amyloid localized to the articular capsule, may be present in the same patient at the same time.
