ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that a number of research priorities that should be recognized in a geographic visualization research agenda. It describes how geographers and other spatial scientists are uniquely positioned to contribute to the advancement of Geovisualization (GVis) and the importance of accepting the challenge to make significant contributions in the areas. The chapter discusses developments of the theory and methods of geographic visualization as a precursor to outlining the research challenges in GVis. The International Cartographic Association approach appropriately reflects the cartographic character of the working group, focusing on geographic visualization as an area of research and application that is closely aligned with cartography. Spatial data representation and its integration with geovisualization is also a central research perspective. Another research perspective relates to the relationships between visualization and cognition. Visualization engages, at a deeper level, the cognitive systems of the geographer.
