ABSTRACT

The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) agenda for geographic information science (GIScience) research provides a basis for funding agencies, research scientists, students, and others to determine a focus for science. The UCGIS research agenda was developed as a national agenda in the United States by members of the GIScience research community primarily in North America. This agenda, while broad and inclusive, is not comprehensive and has different emphases than GIScience research in other parts of the world. The UCGIS agenda is distinctive with its themes for GIScience research from other parts of the world and other organizations in its focus on basic research rather than applications of the science. A high-priority goal for UCGIS when it was established was to work to increase the nation’s investment in GIScience research. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
