ABSTRACT

A primary issue in the development of realistic expert systems, human factors models, simulation systems, and other industrial engineering systems is the management of uncertainty. Fuzzy set theory (FST) is a proven technique for handling uncertainty in many of these application areas. In the early development of fuzzy logic concepts, Zadeh (1965) felt that humans had the ability to analyze imprecise concepts that were not thoroughly understood. However, this ability to analyze these concepts encounters difficulties when one is attempting to represent this type of knowledge numerically.
