Porous pavements are of various types. Their materials and configurations must be selected to suit the context and requirements of each specific project. This chapter introduces the major alternatives in pavement components and materials, and identifies provisions that should be included in almost any porous pavement application.

Pavements, porous and dense alike, are assembled from several types of components. Table 2.1 defines some potential types of components. Few pavements contain all of the listed components; instead, each pavement has a specific combination of components to meet its own requirements.
