ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the lifestyle modifications recommended in the statement. In order to achieve a healthy body weight and body composition, persons with diabetes who are overweight (OW)/obese (OB) need to have a medically supervised program that includes a calorie-restricted diet and an individualized exercise program that emphasizes long-term maintenance of total body mass and preservation of muscle tissue. By restoring a healthier body weight, dietary treatment in OW/OB individuals can provide significant clinical benefits. In designing a weight reduction diet, both the amount of calories and distribution of energy-yielding macronutrients need to be considered. The accepted approach for the diabetic diet has generally included a relatively highcarbohydrate, low-fat distribution. Among the general public, as well as those with type 2 diabetes, there has been a recent increased interest in the use of low-carbohydrate diets for OW/OB intervention.
