ABSTRACT

The laboratory animal resource manager must address several major tasks on a daily basis. An area of tremendous importance is the development and maintenance of the physical structure and assessing the effects of that structure on the animals, the technicians, the research program and the institution. Unfortunately, few have received specific training for this endeavor. There is a multitude of issues relating to the animal facilities physical plant. Each facility is in a different stage of planning, renovation, maintenance, acquisition, or closure. This chapter cannot present a recipe to satisfy all situations, but will instead present information and references relating to broad categories of concern that are relevant to the maintenance of a quality animal care facility.
