ABSTRACT

This chapter will view the issue of security from an initial broad perspective down to individual details that may be of benefit in a given program. The “big picture” commences with a risk analysis of each facility and its activities so as to project the potential risks involved. This is followed up with development of plans, policies and procedures for securing the facilities, strategies to protect resources, and crisis action plans should a security incident take place. This chapter will then examine “hard” security, those pieces of security equipment that can increase the level of protection. These range from standard locks to more sophisticated sensor detection systems. Finally, this chapter will discuss “soft” security, the need to address personnel whether they be visitors, animal care staff, investigators, maintenance staff, etc. There is typically a need for continuing education and a large dose of common sense when dealing with personnel.
