Coffee has been one of the most-used stimulants for many years. One of the compounds in coffee is caffeine, which chemically is a methylxanthine, and is partly responsible for the cardiovascular influence of coffee on heart rate and blood pressure. Caffeine, administered acutely after abstinence, increases blood pressure, catecholamines, and plasma renin activity in normotensive individuals.
