ABSTRACT

Mineralized tissue, such as shell, pearl, bone, dentin, and cementum are indispensable to living organisms. Those naturally occurring mineralized tissues contain inorganic salts and organic substances. The organic materials occupy approximately 49% of the volume of human bone. The organic matter is mostly collagen (90%); the remainder consists of proteoglycans and other noncollagenous proteins. From these data, one can assume that organic substances might play some important role in mineralized tissues.
