4.1 INFLUENCE OF IRRADIATION ON LUMINESCENCE OF PHOSPHORS

4.1.1 Ionizing Radiation-Induced Degradation of Phosphors

Along with excitation luminescence, exposure of crystalline phosphors to ionizing radiation causes radiation damage. Radiation damage to crystalline solids (radiation defects) has been usefully classified

into point and extended (space)

defects. Point defects include vacancies, interstitial atoms, impurity atoms, and combinations of several elementary point defects. Extended defects include dislocations, displacement wedges, etc.
