ABSTRACT

Flexible endoscopes utilize either fiber-optic or video chip technology. The primary difference between the two is a trade-off between image qualities vs. price. Video technology provides images that are far superior to fiber optic; however, they are two to three times more expensive to purchase. The authors’ advice is to buy the best-quality scope one’s budget will allow, and avoid purchasing old fiber-optic scopes with damaged fibers. The quality of the image obtained can easily affect the diagnosis and outcome of the treatment; it is important to be sure one is collecting the best information possible.
