ABSTRACT

Arthritis is a common condition associated with aging, beginning at any age and accumulating thereafter. This chapter discusses both types of arthritis, including the most common, degenerative arthritis. The more aggressive type, inflammatory arthritis, is also highlighted using the most common example. Degenerative arthritis, also called osteoarthritis, is the common type of arthritis known familiarly as “wear and tear” arthritis. The goals of exercise in osteoarthritis are to prevent deconditioning of the muscles which keep the joints stable, to improve joint flexibility, and to enhance aerobic fitness, all within the guidelines of good joint protection. Repetitive heavy activities that injure joints promote osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is experienced by one half of one percent of Americans, and two thirds of those affected are women. Weight control is also an important dietary goal for inflammatory arthritis to prevent increased mechanical stress on inflamed joints.
