ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass, excessive weakening of the bones and increased susceptibility to fractures, particularly of the hip, spine, and wrist. Osteoporosis is a major public health problem with great economic and social costs. Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis include understanding some basic facts about bone physiology and body composition followed by meaningful lifestyle changes with respect to physical activity and nutrition, and in some cases pharmacologic intervention as well. Pain, mobility impairment, and bone fractures as well as this loss of height are the physical symptoms of osteoporosis. Progressive, high intensity strength training has significant potential in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Increased risk for osteoporosis in combination with known health risks such as lung and breast cancer are just some of the many reasons for emphasizing abstinence from cigarettes in women. Glucocorticoids are the most commonly prescribed drugs that can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis.
