ABSTRACT

The United States Department of Agriculture regulates nutrition labeling for meat, poultry, and eggs. Because of the way that meats and poultry are sold, it is often impractical to have nutrition labels on each food package. Specific nutritional guidelines for people over 50 have been in development over the past several years to optimize health, rather than merely prevent deficiency states. The chapter presents a suggestions on healthy food group choices, meal planning, recipes, and grocery shopping to put individually tailored solutions into action. Organizing shopping trips can greatly increase the efficiency and nutritional value of the selections. Most people have a routine when shopping for food. Small changes in shopping habits may make it easier to prepare healthy meals at home. Whether a woman plans menus in advance or fixes meals at the last minute, what is bought at the supermarket probably determines most of the ultimate food intake.
