ABSTRACT

This chapter presents one method for working with community members and project managers to develop effective monitoring systems. It describes the evolution of the Measures of Success approach to monitoring in the context of the project cycle, and provides an overview of the steps in the Measures of Success approach to monitoring. The Biodiversity Conservation Network (BCN) core hypothesis was that, if enterprise-oriented approaches to community-based conservation are going to be effective, they must have a direct link to biodiversity, generate benefits, and involve a community of stakeholders. Initially BCN thought that good-quality monitoring would result if project partners developed detailed biological, social, and enterprise monitoring plans in their project proposals. Activities are specific actions undertaken by project participants designed to reach each of the project objectives, which in turn should lead to realization of the project goal.
