The adsorption of species on ordered metal surfaces in the electronic conductor-ionic conductor interface produces a dramatic effect on the structure of the (1 1) surface. The presence of an adsorbed ad-layer changes the interlayer spacing, inducing a reconstruction at the topmost and, sometimes, also in the underlying layers. Even though the most interesting and applicable interactions emanate from the electrochemical interfaces, it is the UHV studies on platinum single crystals that provide an understanding of the adsorption-induced restructuring.
