ABSTRACT

Exergy analysis becomes more crucial especially for industrial high-temperature drying applications. It is important to highlight that exergy of an energy form or a substance is a measure of its usefulness or quality or potential to cause change. A thorough understanding of exergy and the insights it can provide into the efficiency and environmental impact of drying systems are required for engineers or researchers working in the area of drying technology. An understanding of the relations between energy, exergy and the environment may reveal the fundamental patterns and forces that affect and underlie changes in the environment, and help researchers to deal better with environmental damage. Exergy analysis is a thermodynamic analysis technique based on the second law of thermodynamics which provides an alternative and illuminating means of assessing and comparing processes and systems rationally and meaningfully. Drying is widely used in a variety of thermal energy applications ranging from food drying to wood drying.
