Nuclear waste management (and the permanent disposal of nuclear waste in particular) is a complex and contentious issue. Classes of radioactive materials for which permanent disposal is a substantial challenge include transuranic (TRU) wastes (Section 12.2) and high-level wastes (HLW) and spent nuclear fuel (SNF) (Section 12.3). The subject of lowlevel radioactive waste (LLRW) disposal is discussed in Section 12.6.
