ABSTRACT

The applications of high-impedance surface (HIS) are predominantly related to performance enhancement and miniaturization of antennas, waveguides, and printed circuits. The magnetic conductor property and the electromagnetic band gap (EBG) behavior of HIS provide attractive solutions to traditional problems and limitations in antenna and microwave engineering. This chapter presents a review of recent applications of HIS at microwave frequencies and the use of HIS as ground planes for low-profile wire-type antennas. It provides several examples of the use of a mushroom-type HIS and a thin conformal EBG surface for mobile handsets. The chapter describes the realization of transverse electromagnetic-like waveguides along with their application in a spatial power combiner. It discusses the application of artificial magnetic conductor (AMC)-type ground planes for realizing low-profile high-gain antennas of the Fabry—Perot resonant cavity type. The chapter utilizes AMC surfaces as back reflectors for aperture-coupled array antennas and reviews the application of AMC surfaces on the realization of thin absorbing screens.
