ABSTRACT

Radio frequency identification device (RFID) has received much attention as it is widely believed that RFID can revolutionize supply chain management, complementing bar codes as the main object-tracking system. This chapter introduces the idea of RFID reader synchronization to enable good RFID performance in a dense reader environment while adhering to strict regulations. It examines the ETSI 302 208, Federal Communications Commission Part 15, and RFID Ultra High Frequency Protocol standards and their impact on RFID reader deployment, especially in the Europe. The chapter explains the concept of RFID reader synchronization and how it adheres to strict regulations. It suggests that possible ways in implementing an RFID synchronization system. The chapter offers views on reader synchronization in the United States and the progress of reader synchronization standardization in Europe. In actual implementation, RFID readers must be able to communicate with each other to enable synchronization of RFID readers.
