Quality of service (QoS) in a network refers to the properties of the network that directly contribute to the degree of satisfaction that users perceive. Typically, QoS is deployed through traffic differentiation and by using appropriate resource management techniques to prioritize the treatment of different types of traffic. The recent emergence of heterogeneous, next-generation networks created

new challenges for QoS management. In networks supporting unlicensed mobile access (UMA) technology, the problem of QoS management has not been investigated in great detail. This chapter analyzes issues that are important for successful QoS management in UMA.Main challenges are highlighted, and guidelines for the design of a policy-based management framework to implement, monitor, and control QoS provision are given.
