ABSTRACT

This chapter will present an overview of the comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) technique, and in particular, in the context of considering the second dimension column separation as a monitor or analysis step subsequent to the first dimension. This allows the conceptual comparison of the hyphenated system GC×GC with the more familiar technique of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In hyphenated systems that offer truly greater information content, the two dimensions should be orthogonal (see later), and generally, in the chromatography realm, spectroscopic detection provides the most recognizable orthogonal second dimension to the chromatography separation step.
