Th ree decades ago, researchers who pioneered the study of resilience were concerned specifi cally with its relevance to the etiology of psychopathology in children (Garmezy, 1971, 1974; Garmezy & Streitman, 1974). Today, resilience occupies the attention of investigators and theorists whose concerns span a broad array of scientifi c endeavors ranging from genetic epidemiology to sociology. Th e multidisciplinary scope of this volume refl ects broad recognition of the need for meaningful progress toward an improved understanding of resilience.
