ABSTRACT

Because hosts are exposed to a variety of threats, there is a growing need for organizations to deploy host-based firewalls across the enterprise. This chapter outlines the ideal features of a host-based firewall — features that are typically not needed or present in a purely

personal

firewall software implementation on a privately owned PC. In addition, the author describes his own experiences with, and lessons learned from, deploying agentbased, host-based firewalls across an enterprise. The author concludes that host-based firewalls provide a valuable additional layer of security.
