ABSTRACT

Although existing information retrieval (IR) methods are continuously improving, they still fail to address the increasing requirements and expectations of many users with specifi c needs. For example, most existing search engines such as Google and MSN Live Search employ keyword-based searches, while sharing systems such as Flickr and YouTube might extend this capability with tag-based searches. Th e infamous “advanced search” interfaces allow users to specify even more complex (keyword-based) queries, optionally with some additional domain-specifi c attributes

(e.g., size, fi le type for images). Video search sites such as IMDb and MovieLens take complexity to another level by off ering (multistep) interfaces with many text fi elds, drop-down menus, and multichoice listboxes.
