Abstract

In the move towards a ubiquitous and device independent Web it is necessary to make a complete characterization of the delivery context, including the capabilities of the device. Current frameworks (CC/PP, UAProf 2.0) provide effective tools for achieving a device independent Web, although there are limitations in their specifications and current implementations. Many devices do not implement any tools to express their capacities. This chapter aims to investigate existing synergies among context acquisition, expression of device capabilities, delivery context characterization, content adaptation and application layer protocol optimization in web environments. Two main proposals are presented. The first is a proxy-based solution for the detection of device capabilities that allows the accurate acquisition and provisioning of the user’s device context in web environments. The second is a collaborative gateway/proxy server interception solution for enhancing web browsing over cellular links that reduces HTTP overhead and uses the dynamic expression of capabilities to enhance content negotiation, and consequently content
