The deployment of radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems requires careful analysis, planning, and control to enable the organization to obtain an optimal solution, otherwise the perceived benefits may never materialise. This chapter discusses a supply chain case study within the context of a RFID rationale and deployment methodology. The case study involves the tracking and identification of pallets and cartons amongst various members of a RFID trial. The methodology is divided into three phases: business, infrastructure, and deployment environments. Understanding the current factors affecting the discretionary behavior of the organization and the motivating aspects to the deployment is appraised in the first phase of the methodology. Once the organization has assessed a business case, the investigation of the technical needs of RFID is undertaken in the physical environment. If the motivation for deployment is still active, the instigation of a RFID testing and pilot phase is commissioned. The specification of phase transitional motivators and their outcomes will guide the organization throughout the deployment methodology.
