ABSTRACT

I see my role as Chief Commissioner of Police primarily as a strategic leader, operating within the public sector, accountable to the government and the community, and with a duty to make the very best of the authority, money, resources, and above all, the people given to me to manage and lead. Victoria Police is a large public institution employing more than 13,600 people: 11,500 are sworn police, and the rest are public servants and protective security offi - cers. We have an annual budget of 1.4 billion AUD (i.e., about 1.2 billion USD or 575 million GBP). We serve a population in excess of 5 million. Most of these people live in Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia, with a population of 3,300,000. Th e rest are scattered across a vast hinterland of towns and rural communities.
