ABSTRACT

The growth rate and production of biomedical information far exceeds the capacity of individual researchers to keep up with developments in the field. There is a strong interest in biology now for a more integrative and “systems” approach whereby characterization for specific genes or proteins are sought in terms of a broader context which includes other genes or proteins, requiring biomedical researchers to be aware of findings that go beyond their individual focus. Furthermore, there is a growing interest in linking outcomes of basic biomedical research to evidence produced in clinical or operational settings, with an eye toward achieving improved translation of research, which is also pushing the demand for efficient means for integrating evidence in published literature with other biomedical resources.
