ABSTRACT
Austria is a democratic republic and, since January 1995, a member of the European Union. Covering an area of 84,000 square kilometers, Austria is a relatively small country situated in the heart of Europe. Of its eight million inhabitants, 750,000 are foreigners.1 Austria’s capital, Vienna, is situated in the eastern part of the country and has a population of six million.
