ABSTRACT

Leaking underground storage tanks (LUSTs) contribute to the contamination of the environment and pose a great risk to human health. The acronym LUST has apparently been dropped by industry and the government probably because the term is politically/socially incorrect or unacceptable. There are an estimated 5-6 million underground storage tanks (USTs) in the United States that contain either a hazardous substance or petroleum. Of those, approximately 400,000 are believed to be leaking. Many more will begin to leak in the near future.
