ABSTRACT

Activities in the field of green engineering and green chemistry are increasing at a near exponential rate. For example, prior to the preparation of this chapter, EPA Region 2 hosted a conference on September 27, 2007, in New York City entitled, Seize the Moment: Opportunities for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering in the Pharmaceutical Industry. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss opportunities to encourage environmental stewardship by way of "greening" the fields of chemistry and engineering, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. Various sessions, held throughout the morning and into the afternoon, discussed different arenas of "greening" in the industry. One particular session examined the environmental footprint of manufacturing processes. Although related to the pharmaceutical industry, it provided valuable information and challenges in this emerging area. As noted, the overall theme of the conference was to present various means to help achieve sustainability in the industry [1].
