ABSTRACT
Since the time of René Descartes, humankind has gradually learned to focus on itself as body (matter) and mind (brain). In general, this is due to a “deal” worked out between Descartes and the Pope. In order to get permission to study the body, Descartes appealed to the Pope for permission to dissect a human corpse. In their agreement, Descartes agreed that he would have nothing to do with the spirit/soul, the mind, or the emotions if he should find them in the body. The soul, mind, and emotions were the exclusive jurisdiction of the church at that time. Descartes claimed the physical body as his realm of study, thus separating the body from the mind. This bargain set the tone and direction of science for the next 200 years. It divided the human into two distinct and separate spheres that could not overlap.
